The papers in this volume were originally presented at a conference on “The Finnish Experience in the Western Great Lakes Region: New Perspectives.” Held at the University of Minnesota, Duluth, in April of 1974, the conference brought together about 500 scholars and lay persons interested in ithe evolution of Finnish-American culture in the Western Great Lakes region. The 1974 conference in Duluth was historic in that it was the first open forum in which scholars from both Finland and the United States shared the results of their research on Finnish-American culture.
